A global surgical robotics business has confirmed it will open a new large-scale manufacturing facility in Cambridgeshire.

Impington-headquartered CMR Surgical, whose Versius® Surgical Robotic System has been adopted in at least six NHS hospitals to date, will open the new 7,044.8 sq. m. floor space facility in Ely. It will house up to 200 skilled employees, including production, quality, manufacturing engineering, supply, operations, and logistics.

The Versius system is used for keyhole surgery, helping to reduce the size of wounds and improve patient outcomes and recovery times.

CMR Surgical says the new site will enable upscaled manufacturing processes to meet the increasing global demand for Versius.

Barrington D’Arcy, Chief Operations Officer of CMR Surgical, said: “Establishing a world-class manufacturing facility to meet worldwide demand was a logical step forward for CMR. Connecting in proximity our skilled workforce from manufacturing, R&D, supply and other important functions means that we can bring together the strongest talent to deliver the commercial production upscale for Versius.”

CMR was founded in 2014 by Martin Frost, Luke Hares, Keith Marshall, Paul Roberts, and Mark Slack. The company raised $100m in 2018 in what was hailed as the “venture financing deal of the year” at the Medtech Insight Awards. A further $240m followed in 2019.

Since then, CMR’s Versius system has been deployed in hospital settings in Australia, India and the Middle East, as well as quite a few countries in Europe

CMR has more than 700 employees working in R&D, clinical, manufacturing, supply chain, commercial, and service.

Speaking about the announcement, Dr Nik Johnson, the mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: “This is great news for the local economy, for local jobs and for local people.

“Our region is already renowned as a birthplace for world-leading and pioneering companies like CMR. As they scale, we want them to see Cambridgeshire and Peterborough as the place where they can meet their growth ambition.”
