Cambridge has been recognised as the most innovative city in the UK relative to its population, according to a newly released report by Dealroom. On the global stage, it claims fourth place—surpassed only by the American giants of San Francisco, Boston, and New York.
The ranking comes from Dealroom’s Global Tech Ecosystem Index, which assesses start-up ecosystems in 288 cities across 69 countries. The index highlights regions with exceptional innovation output compared to their size, taking into account metrics such as start-up density, research activity, and the strength of collaboration between academia and industry.
This latest recognition highlights the powerful innovation engine driving Cambridge’s growth. Diarmuid O’Brien, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Innovation at the University of Cambridge, noted that the city’s continued leadership in innovation is the result of deliberate strategy. The University, alongside other stakeholders, has introduced numerous initiatives aimed at turning groundbreaking scientific research into real-world applications.
Meanwhile, Gerard Grech, Head of Founders at the University of Cambridge, which nurtures entrepreneurial ventures born out of the University, underscored the city’s distinctive formula for success. He pointed to Cambridge’s unique combination of cutting-edge research, a community of experienced founders, and a thriving culture of enterprise as key ingredients fueling its rise.
Despite a global slowdown in venture capital funding during 2024, Cambridge defied the trend by doubling its investment levels—signalling the growing influence of deep tech in shaping tomorrow’s economies.
With its unparalleled scientific credentials and a robust ecosystem for commercialising innovation, Cambridge is proving that even smaller cities can lead on a global scale when the right ingredients are in place.
