Amazon to create 4,000 new UK jobs this year

Online retail giant Amazon has announced that it plans to create 4,000 new UK jobs this year, despite the tech industry’s downturn.

Under the plans, Amazon’s workforce would top 75,000, making it one of the UK’s top 10 biggest private sector employers.

The permanent roles will be split between Amazon's warehouse work and corporate work in London and Manchester, and the firm’s technology work in Edinburgh and Cambridge. Roles will include job functions in software development, product management and engineering, as well as operational duties in Amazon’s fulfilment centres, sort centres and delivery stations.

"We're continuing to invest in talent right across the UK, from apprentices in Swansea to data scientists in Edinburgh," said John Boumphrey, Amazon UK country manager.

“People join us not just for the wide variety of roles, great pay and benefits, but for the career development opportunities we provide,” he added.

Amazon’s announcement comes after the company opened four new warehouses and created 25,000 UK jobs in 2021 in response to a boom in online shopping, spurred by Covid pandemic lockdowns.

In addition to the direct jobs Amazon provides, it is estimated that more than 85,000 British small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) sell on Amazon, which supports an additional 250,000 jobs across the UK, according to the retail giant.

"This means Amazon will have created 40,000 new jobs in the UK in the past three years," the company said.

"Amazon has invested billions of pounds across the UK, enabling it to be one of the UK's most significant job creators in recent years".
