The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the immense importance of keeping surfaces and other areas we come into contact with clean and sanitised. To help with this plight, a Suffolk company – backed by the Accelerate Cambridge programme* – has developed an innovative antiviral coating technology that kills viruses, including Covid-19, on any surface. And it has now won government funding to help further its work.

CodiKoat**, which is supported by the Accelerate Cambridge programme at Cambridge Judge Business School, was awarded £325,000 in UK government grants to help further develop its nanoparticle coating technology that inactivates viruses on the spot and can be used on any surface – be it hard or soft, rough or smooth, curved or flat.

‘Help society get back to normal quicker’

The company, based in the EpiCentre innovation facility in Haverhill, Suffolk, was the recent recipient of a virtual visit by UK Secretary of Health Matt Hancock. Speaking about the technology, Mr Hancock said: “That’s amazing, I could see the benefit of this immediately including within the NHS”.

Dr Reza Saberi, co-founder and executive director of CodiKoat, said: “Our unique anti-viral surface coating blends electricity and chemistry to provide simple, immediate and long-lasting protection against microbes and viruses, including COVID-19. We hope it will help the society get back to normal quicker.”

Dr Saberi also said that having access to a team of business experts at the Entrepreneurship Centre at Cambridge Judge gave “invaluable advice and direction in order to speed up our progress.”

The next step for Codikoat is to pilot the technology in different situations and environments, such as ATM keypads, care homes and Hotels.
