» Physicist/ Optics Engineer

Main purpose of the job
To take a leading design role within multi-disciplinary project teams in the field of diagnostic product development. The position will require you to apply your extensive physics and optics experience to deliver sensing solutions for the development of world-leading medical products for our clients around the globe.

Your specific responsibilities will vary according to your particular expertise but are likely to include:
- Lead optical design role on multidisciplinary project
- Development of specifications
- Generation of innovative solutions
- Identification of risks
- Proof of principle by analysis and laboratory evaluation
- Detailed design, implementation and test
- Task and project management, typically involving teams of up to ten engineers
- Effective communication, both internally and in front of clients
- Preparation of comprehensive documentation
- Contribution to the company’s external profile through development of IP or as a technical author
- You will also support the diagnostics business development function, exhibiting and presenting at key conferences and representing the Diagnostics Group at sales meetings.
- You will use your strong technical expertise and knowledge to develop relationships with current and future clients by demonstrating an understanding of their needs and writing proposals to define work programmes.

Minimum requirements
To meet the requirements of this role you should have:

- A good first degree in Physics or Natural Sciences
- Significant experience, preferably to PhD level, of the development of optical techniques of relevance to diagnostic or life science applications
- A strong understanding of the principles of sensing and measurement and the ability to undertake signal chain analysis
- Strong practical skills with experience of ‘hands-on’ development
- A creative mind, capable of designing bespoke solutions to complex sensing challenges where existing off the shelf solutions will not meet performance criteria
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong personal motivation and enthusiasm for the technology area
- The ability to work effectively as a team player

In addition, any experience of the following will also be beneficial:
- Direct experience of an emerging technology that will be commercially important in life sciences or diagnostics in the near future
- Experience in using optical design tools
- Experience of C or MATLAB
- Algorithm development for sensing applications
- Product development in a commercial environment
- Experience of other, non-optical, sensing technologies
